Like Sakhalin itself, the Regional Museum in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk is a treasure of unusual and interesting objects from the past and the present. In recent years Sakhalin has opened its doors to the outside world and an increasing number of people arrive from afar, keen to find out about the Region. Many find their way to the Museum where they are delighted and stimulated by the fascinating collections.
Shell Development Sakhalin B.V., a Dutch company, is proud to sponsor this English and Russian Guide to the Museum. Its publication, in 1993, coincides with the 350th anniversary of the first visit to Sakhalin by Dutch sailors under the command of Captain M. G. Vries in the vessel Castricum.
The Guide describes the Museum and its collections briefly, and for the first time in English. It was written by the Museum staff under the direction of Mr T.P. Roon. Miss M. 1. Ischenko and Mrs C.L. Holmes edited and compiled the document and Miss M. Amirova translated it. The photographs were produced by Mr V. 1. Karnaukhov, and the booklet was printed in London by Shell International Petroleum Company Ltd.
