The Sakhalin Regional Museum
AMPHIBIANS AND REPTILES

The display has a collection of amphibians (Amphibia) and reptiles (Reptilia) found in the Sakhalin region.

The amphibian collection has wet species of all the non-caudate and caudate amphibians of Sakhalin and the Kurile Islands. Amphibians are remarkable animals able to live both on land and in water.

Non-caudate (tailless) amphibians (Anura), are represented in the islands by four frog species. Only on Sakhalin are the Grey, or Regular Toad (Bufo bufo) - the largest frog - and,the Siberian Frog (Rana amurensis) found. The Far Eastern Frog (Rana chensinensis) is found in the whole territory of Sakhalin and in the South Kuriles, Kunashir and Shikotan, and on the small islands of Polonskii, Green, Yurii, Tanfilyef and Anuchin in the Malaya Kurilskaya Ridge. The warmth-loving Far Eastern Tree-frog (Hyla japonica) inhabits the woods of the south-western part of Sakhalin and Kunashir Island.

The caudate amphibians (Caudata) are represented in the islands of the region by only one species, the Siberian Salamander (Hynobius keyserlingii). This animal is found on Sakhalin and the Kurile Islands of Paramushir, Shumshu and Kunashir.

The reptile collection has all the species inhabiting Sakhalin and some species special to the southern Kuriles. Only two species of reptiles that are not met in the Kurile Islands inhabit Sakhalin. They are the Viviparous Lizard (Lacerta vivipara) and a venomous snake - the regular Adder (Vipera berus). The Adder is most common on mountain slopes, on the banks of mountain rivers and on the sea coasts. The Viviparous Lizard occurs everywhere on the island in deciduous and coniferous woods, and even in town gardens. As far as the Kurile Islands are concerned, the rep-tiles live only in the woods of Kunashir Island. The collection has a wet specimen of one of the snakes from this island - the Japanese Rat Snake (Elaphe climacophora) and a wet example of the rare Far Eastern Skink (Eurneces latiscutatus). The Rat Snakes are heat-loving animals, mostly found near thermal sources. The Far Eastern Skinks live only on the banks of thermal streams on volcano slopes, and usually concentrate near the outlet of a heat source.

The display "Natural and climatic features of the Sakhalin region" includes a preserved Pacific Leatherback Turtle (Dermochelys criacea). This marine reptile was caught by chance by fishermen in the South Kuriles on August 20, 1966. This turtle is a resident of subtropical and tropical seas but is occasionally met in the waters of the warm Soya current (a branch of the Kuro-Sivo current) near the coasts of the South Kurile Islands.
